Job Specification:
We have an opening for an Industrial R&T Engineer within the Landing Gear Research & Technology team in Filton. The job holder is responsible for developing and delivering Powder Metallurgy (PM) Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) & Direct Energy Deposition (DED) technology to the ATI funded Landing Gear research portfolio. They will support capability roadmaps which bring together multiple technologies and capabilities that are being developed in the Landing Gear perimeter for future industrial applications.
Tasks & Accountabilities: Overview
The successful applicant will have the autonomy to review the current new technologies landscape, develop and deliver new opportunities for Landing Gear manufacturing and material capability development streams. You will be accountable for delivering the integrated Industrial road map up to TRL6 between the two potential technologies (PM HiP & DED) for assessment within the project perimeter - and developing additional use cases / workload where required. He or she ?will be accountable for integrating industrial needs into the LG R&T project environment, ensuring the needs of industrial are firmly present in that workstream. He or she will have the opportunity to work alongside other areas of the Manufacturing Engineering Industrial Team to identify strategic opportunities to develop and implement the new technologies across the business. He or she will be accountable to bring the industrial advantages of the new manufacturing technologies at the co-design table with the LG engineering team, to develop the new products in a co-design approach. He or she will be supporting the development of roadmap up to MRL8 encompassing supply chain.
Tasks & Accountabilities: Detailed
● Support evaluation phase of initial test results, provide manufacturing input for project decision making.
● Provide detailed manufacturing feedback for comparison between PM HiP materials (custom 465 & 300M etc), covering machining, distortion (inc correction), managing process variabilities. Review final measurements to determine variations in manufacturing processes
● Assuming successful test results - Support discussions for larger scale demonstrator parts, including manufacturing methods, canister sizing and liaison with the Project partners
● Knowledge capture of the process for PM HiP and machining, also DED, cold working, Heat Treats and machining
● Provide support for TRL 1 (June 2022) and closure of any actions from the review.
● Provide industrial input to TRL 2 & 3 assessments in 2023 - compile industrial data for the criteria and provide summary and evidence to support status & statements.
● Develop Links to existing APTL network and other specialist teams for PM, DED, Hard metal machining, process & treatments
