REPORTING TO: AIT Mechanical Satellite Lead Engineer
JOB SUMMARY:- In the period between Project Kick off and Readiness Review (for manufacturing), own and apply a standard process to support and streamline the Propulsion Customisation phase from an AIT perspective.
- Promote the transition from the customisation phase to the AIT Preparation & Execution stage of the project with a consistent and agreed approach.
- Provide inputs to schedule and cost estimates during project customisation. This is especially relevant during the project kick-off phase
- Responsible for Propulsion System Integration DFMAIT; “fit for purpose.”
Support to:- New Product Introduction and
- Involvement in the Technical / Process Improvement and
- R&D Initiatives.
Communication of Propulsion System product/process variance to Process Owners & Stakeholders. Also awareness to Departmental Heads, Cost controllers and relevant and impacted AIT Team members.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Technical Authority for AIT customisation processes, and AIT focal point for project input during customisation phase.
- Technical reference for all propulsion and integration engineering aspects
- Support all Project DMU Sessions (Project 3D Modelling and design layout) – Attend all input DFMAIT – Propulsion layout input from lessons learned, Improvement proposals and 2nd closure of operational issues.
- Liaison with Lead Engineers and Process Owners to Advise best practice on process in design
- Support to Bids for Projects and ITTs for technology proposals
- Responsible for Handover process of customised industrial data for Project to Product engineering team in standard formats.
- MRR / ARR - Deliverables pack to include references and issue status for: Block diagram, Drawings, Schedule, Documents List, Exceptions, Minutes + DIP structure checklist dependant (time frame handover dependant)
- Generic Schedule Technical Owner
- Generic sequence / VPB (IPS) Maintenance (Overall Build Sequence for Satellite Owner) – Process Improvement, Maintenance, Lessons Learned, Only customised if large difference to standard.
- Define Generic Schedule to Project Specific Production Schedule and creation from standard PBOM (time frame handover dependant)
- New product introduction (NPI) – support to development, design for manufacture assembly & test, PBOM definition, liaising with Product/Project Leads and Process owners to ensure fitness for purpose and optimised design.
- To control and manage budgets for NPI / improvement work
- To establish baseline budgets for Propulsion project customisation.
- R & D – Involvement and Implementation. Participate in the qualification of special or new processes
- Definition of project MBOM – Definition of kits philosophy on project. To enable initial project pre-production schedule PBOM ready for production considers full reflection from BOM through Schedule to WIS and Label in cleanroom meeting all stakeholders requirements.
- AIT Test BOM – mechanical test equipment definition and layout & lessons learned from operational projects implemented in design.
- Tooling and build aids identification and communication on projects.
- MGSE identification & support definition of works platforms for ergonomics around structures.
- Focal point for Cross site 2nd Closure quality issues fed back downstream to process owner to enable solution to quality issues to enable mistake proofing at customisation of design.
- Support to AIT Engineering functional managers for any Project process and customisation issues.
- Oversee critical integrations to the Satellite and provide technical expertise, such as Solar Arrays, Antennas, appendages.
- Liaise with process owners through customisation phase for advice and particular issues with a process.
- Offer support to projects to complete PDR’s & CDR’s
- Reports to AIT Manager on project issues, and Functional Engineering manager through phase issues, costs, flash reports.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION LEVEL:- Minimum of HNC level in a Mechanical discipline.
- A lesser qualification is acceptable if a high level of similar industry experience can be demonstrated.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:Good understanding and detailed experience of all types of Manufacturing ncluding but not limited to:-- Lean manufacturing techniques, root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
- Electrical and Mechanical Assembly, Integration and Test
- Production Planning & Scheduling.
- Support to production.
- Mechanical & Electrical Tooling and handling equipment.
- Procedures and process control.
- Practical and proactive.
- Quality driven approach with high attention to detail.
- High self-motivation and ability to deal with changing priorities on a multi project basis.
- Good planning skills and process competence, (MRP system experience an advantage).
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Previous experience of telecoms payload builds is a distinct advantage.
- Good time management & well organised.
